About the Reading

The Pen Parentis Literary Salons in lower Manhattan bring top-quality working writers in small groups of 3+ to a lovely upscale setting to present readings and celebrate the incredible diversity of creative writing by parents. This series aims to shatter all stereotypes of “parent writer” in order to encourage acceptance of parent-artist continued involvement in the greater arts world. Readings are punctuated by lively discussions about time management, creative process, etc. All Pen Parentis readers must be parents, but diversity of all kinds is strongly sought. Previous authors have included Darin Strauss, Jennifer Egan, Mahogany Browne, Stewart Lewis, Arthur Phillips, Victor LaValle, Rumaan Alam, Emily Raboteau, Mira Jacob, etc. The glamorous Andaz Wall Street graciously provides wine and nosh. Events occur on the second Tuesday of each month September through May from 7pm -9pm. See www.penparentis.org for more info. We have also begun to franchise into other cities. Currently we have occasional Salons in Los Angeles at the marvelous Last Bookstore in Downtown LA. Events are free and open to the general public. No travel budget.
