In this book, John Andrews pries loose all the bitterness of what it means to come of age as a gay man in the south and laces sweetness in the wounds whenever possible. These poems are an elegy to what is given up, “picket fence, doctor visits, / sitting next to each other / in church,” and an ode to what is discovered, “the hymn of surviving.” In crisp lines and haunting images, Andrews’ voice rings true.
—Sandy Longhorn author of The Alchemy of My Mortal Form

Part love letter, part case study, Colin Is Changing His Name follows more than one young Colin through the joyous, painful, tender, and sometimes isolating process of discovering, and becoming, who he is. John Andrews’ light touch in this exquisitely controlled first collection shapes insights you won’t be able to stop thinking—and caring—about. We all know the danger that exists for Colin in our world, but the wit and steady affection in the discoveries and the voice here offer hope as vivid as “July dancing/across your skin” and powerful as “the hymn of surviving/the work of breaking/out of your own flesh.”
—Lisa Lewis author of The Body Double
