About the Reading

Known in literary circles for serving the local, national and international poetry community, as well as having a reputation for high quality open readers, Moonday moves forward in its 12th year, continuing a tradition of excellence in Los Angeles at the newly designed Flintridge Bookstore and Coffee house in beautiful La Cañada Flintridge.

Moonday has its roots on the West Side of Los Angeles. When a reading at the former Barnes & Noble at the Westside Pavilion, run by poet/dramatist, rg cantalupo, was suddenly discontinued by management in 2002, poet Alice Pero resurrected a Phoenix from the ashes. With the help of cantalupo and poet, Anne Silver, Moonday began its life at Seattle’s Best on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica, moved briefly to another coffee shop, then spent eight wonderful years at Village Books in the Pacific Palisades. Lois P. Jones came on board as co-producer in 2006. When Village Books closed its doors, Moonday found a new home at the lovely Aldersgate Retreat House/Buerge Chapel, also in the Palisades with a very successful run for two more years. After a brief run at the lovely Little Theater in Santa Monica, we are pleased to announce that Moonday will be moving to Flintridge Bookstore in La Cañada, California. An extension of the original Moonday, “Moonday East”, had a successful two-year run at Flintridge Bookstore and is happy to return. As many of you already know, the bookstore is a beautiful venue with plenty of outside and underground parking, a café and a lovely and well stocked poetry section.

We look so forward to seeing our poets & audience and we welcome you back to Flintridge. Moonday will continue its great tradition of quality poetry with your help and support!

What you’ve achieved, you (Alice) and Lois, has been nothing short of remarkable. You’ve generously given a richness and depth to the city’s culture (for) so many people—poets and listeners—and you’ve done it with grace and grit. These series are never easy to sustain, hey? But you guys make it look as though they are…Moonday in particular
— William O’Daly, poet/Neruda translator

The Moonday series stands out from the average open mic series due to the depth of its community roots, the talent of its participants, and the overall fun of the experience. I’ve read in the series several times, and each time was a great pleasure.
— Tony Barnstone, Albert Upton Professor and Chair of English Whittier College

My thanks to the Moonday readings for supporting the spoken word in such a masterful and joyous way. Alice and Lois, have created a long-running reading series–a labor of love, for sure–that encourages talented poets and writers to share their work with enthusiasm; and all in attendance are enriched.
—Doraine Poretz, poet/teacher

Some of our previously featured readers include: Suzanne Lummis, David St. John, Tony and Willis Barnstone, Wanda Coleman, Charles Harper Webb, Ronald Koertge, Michael C. Ford, Cecilia Woloch, Mariano Zaro and Brendan Constantine.
